FlowTrade set out to create one platform where individual traders and investment companies could monitor, evaluate, and act on portfolios spanning crypto, stocks, real estate, commodities, and custom assets. Starting with requirements clarification and a blank codebase, Elementica took full product-engineering ownership — from architecture and delivery to production launch and continuous post-MVP development.

Client context

Investment portfolios rarely live in one place. A user may hold crypto on exchanges, public equities through market platforms, physical or real-estate assets outside traditional feeds, and custom investments that require an entirely different evaluation process. The result is fragmented information, inconsistent valuation, and limited visibility across the portfolio as a whole.

FlowTrade's original vision was to give individual traders and professional trading companies a coherent way to manage that complexity. The product needed to do more than aggregate balances. It had to turn different types of financial data into understandable portfolio views, support live market workflows, enable evaluation of non-standard assets, and connect investment intelligence to automated execution.

The Australian client came to Elementica at the requirements stage around 2020. There was no existing platform or inherited codebase: the product, technical architecture, and delivery process all had to be created from the ground up.

02

The challenge

The first challenge was product definition. The client had deep knowledge of investments and trading, but transforming that expertise into a coherent software product required continuous clarification: which user problems mattered most, how different investment categories should behave, what information belonged in each workflow, and which ideas would create real value rather than additional complexity.

The second challenge was technical. Crypto, stocks, real estate, commodities, and custom assets differ in data availability, valuation logic, update frequency, and user interaction. A single platform had to preserve those differences while presenting users with one clear view of their holdings and performance.

The most demanding part came after the core platform matured: automated crypto trading. A single algorithm could depend on more than 100 configurable conditions, including market indicators and strategy rules such as Golden Cross patterns. Those conditions had to be evaluated consistently, converted into real trading actions, and reflected back in the user experience.

03

Elementica's role

Elementica operated as FlowTrade's product and engineering team rather than as a feature-only development vendor. Our responsibility started with requirements clarification and business-goal refinement, continued through product planning and technical architecture, and covered implementation, quality assurance, production release, support, and post-MVP expansion.

The engagement began with one developer. As the product scope and maturity increased, the team grew to more than six people across software development, QA, and project management. This allowed the work to evolve from an initial build into an ongoing product-development partnership without losing the context accumulated during the early discovery stage.

Trading expertise remained central throughout delivery. The team worked directly with domain experts, translating practical market rules and trading behaviour into product requirements, executable logic, interfaces, and validation scenarios.

04

The solution

A unified experience for fundamentally different assets

Elementica designed and built the core investment-management platform around a shared portfolio experience. In production, users could bring together crypto, stocks, real estate, commodities, and custom assets while retaining the data and workflows specific to each category.

The platform created a consistent layer for portfolio visibility without forcing every investment into the same data model. This made diversified portfolios easier to understand while preserving the characteristics that influence investment decisions.

Real-time dashboards that made financial data usable

The client interface combined dynamic tables, interactive charts, portfolio summaries, alerts, and real-time components. The system translated continuously changing investment and market data into clear product experiences that helped users understand current positions and historical changes without manually consolidating information from several tools.

React and Next.js provided the foundation for the main interface. Chart.js, MUI, and TradingView API supported data-dense financial views and familiar market visualizations, while Three.js was used for richer interactive experiences.

A dedicated workflow for custom-asset evaluation

Traditional market feeds cannot provide a live price for every investment. Real estate and other custom assets require additional information and purpose-built evaluation workflows.

Elementica built a separate custom-asset evaluation portal connected to the wider platform. This extended FlowTrade beyond exchange-traded holdings and allowed the product to represent a broader picture of a user's investment portfolio.

Configurable automated crypto trading

During post-MVP development, FlowTrade expanded from portfolio visibility into automated execution. Elementica developed a Python and FastAPI-based algorithmic trading system built around configurable strategy templates.

The challenge was the interaction between conditions rather than any single indicator. Advanced configurations could include more than 100 rules governing when a trade should or should not proceed. The system evaluated these conditions and executed real trades through Binance and Gate.io while exposing the resulting state to users and administrators.

The specialized trading engine was separated from the core NestJS backend. This allowed trading logic to evolve without overloading the main investment-management platform.

Operational control behind the client experience

The administration panel gave the operational team customer CRUD capabilities and the visibility required to monitor and assist users with trading activity. Together with the marketing website, client dashboard, trading automation, and custom-asset portal, it formed a connected product ecosystem rather than a standalone dashboard.

05

Engineering decisions that mattered

Separate systems around separate responsibilities

The platform used TypeScript and NestJS for the core backend, React and Next.js for the primary user experience, and Python with FastAPI for algorithmic trading. Each part matched a distinct product responsibility, protecting the core platform from the complexity and change rate of the trading engine.

Product clarity over raw data density

Financial products can easily become collections of tables and indicators. Charts, alerts, visualizations, and dynamic tables were treated as decision-support tools. Information architecture and interface behaviour were refined alongside backend functionality so that new data created user value rather than interface noise.

Domain expertise inside the development loop

Trading behaviour cannot be inferred from tickets alone. Direct access to experts allowed the team to validate terminology, edge cases, algorithm conditions, and expected outcomes as features were designed and implemented.

Architecture designed for continuous evolution

The product changed substantially during more than five years of cooperation. A modular frontend and backend foundation, a specialized algorithmic service, and reusable product workflows allowed the team to add post-release capabilities while preserving earlier functionality.

Results

FlowTrade progressed from an early product idea to a production investment-management platform with multiple connected applications and a foundation for ongoing development.

  • A new fintech product designed and developed from a blank codebase through production release
  • One portfolio experience spanning five investment categories, including market-priced and custom assets
  • A complete product surface covering acquisition, customer workflows, administration, evaluation, and automated trading
  • A configurable automated trading system capable of representing strategies with more than 100 interacting conditions
  • A team that scaled from one developer to more than six specialists while retaining long-term product context
  • Continued support and feature expansion after the original MVP
07

Product evolution

FlowTrade has continued to evolve with the market. Its current public direction focuses on AI-native trading infrastructure connecting intelligence, execution, monitoring, and operational control.

This direction is a natural evolution of the market need behind the original platform: traders need more than predictions or isolated dashboards. They need systems that connect information to controlled, repeatable action.
